Kaimana Hila – Award-winning Historic Remodel

Our most memorable job to date, was a historical landmark in Hawaii that was built in the 1890’s by a famous architect named Charles Dicky. It was an ideal project because of the intricacy that had to be applied to it. This unrestored dwelling was one termite short of complete disrepair. A thorough visual inventory of the skin, structure and foundation revealed incredible damage from both termite infestation and Hawaii’s very damaging salty, humid climate. Knowing that a complete re-build would require a height variance with no guarantees of success, coupled with the owner’s strong family history in Hawaii, the owner decided that a historic preservation project was the desired path. And so the journey began.

We completely gutted this 3200 sq. ft home and took the siding off down to studs, replaced it wall by wall, and reframed the trusses, replaced all the flooring, sanded and stained it, replaced on the millwork with the original profiles, resided the exterior with grooved cedar shake, replaced the roof with cedar shake, replaced the exterior trim with the original profile, replaced all weighted sashed windows with their original profiles, sanded staircases and railings, re-stained and re-sealed floors, staircases, and ceilings, designed custom cabinetry to replace the old.
